COMIC - DOONESBURY'S CHARLIE HEBDO PROBLEM

COMIC -

DOONESBURY'S CHARLIE HEBDO PROBLEM

When Garry Trudeau denounced the Charlie Hebdo cartoonists for irresponsibly crossing a "red line" of acceptable satire, it pained me to disagree with my personal cartooning hero, and America's most prominent cartoon satirist, so strongly.

I would add that while I disagree with him on this issue, and found that disagreement interesting enough to draw a comic about it, I could not respect Garry Trudeau more as a cartoonist, as a satirist, and as a person.  I became a cartoonist in no small part because of Doonesbury, and I think the comic strip's 40+year run is one of the great achievements in all of American arts.

Click here to read the text of his speech, and here to see his Meet the Press Interview from Sunday, clarifying his stance.

And click here to read my initial reaction on Twitter to Trudeau's remarks, and here to read my first essay on Charlie Hebdo (also in reaction to a stance similar to Trudeau's).
