Doonesbury's Sandbox Celebrates One Year of GWOT-Lit

The Sandbox: Dispatches From Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan

In October 2006, Doonesbury creator Garry Trudeau launched a military blog (or "milblog") that soon became a vast online forum through which hundreds of service members in Afghanistan and Iraq began to share stories with readers here at home.

The Sandbox celebrates its one-year anniversary this month with the release of The Sandbox: Dispatches From Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan (Andrews McMeel Publishing, $16.95). Many of the Sandbox's most eloquent and compelling posts have been compiled to form this brilliant and emotionally charged book. This collection of stories is nonpartisan, devoid of politicking and propaganda, allowing readers a true-to-life glimpse at the effects of war on those deployed as well as those anxiously awaiting their return, with posts from both perspectives.

If you consider yourself a fan of all things comics, check out RC Harvey's blog on GoComics.com. Just click on the Comic Strips link and look for the section titled Rants & Raves.

Rants & Raves is composed of snippets from Harvey's bi-weekly newsletter of the same name, and it is truly written for the comics and cartooning aficionado. Harvey adeptly covers the current headlines as well as forgotten comics lore, always offering unique insights on the behind-the-scenes workings of the industry.

RCHarvey.com

From RC Harvey's bio on RCHarvey.com:

Robert C. Harvey (to disclose his actual name) has been writing about cartooning for well over a quarter of a century, beginning with a column in the Menomonee Falls Gazette (a weekly newspaper of comic strips) in the fall of 1973.  A one-time freelance cartoonist (of the "bush league" variety, he says), Harvey has produced published work in nearly all the cartooning venues--comic strips, editorial cartoons, comic books, and magazine cartoons.  He is a member of the National Cartoonist Society (NCS), an associate member of the American Association of Editorial Cartoonists (AAEC), and a member of the Comic Art Professionals Society (CAPS).

Big Comics Interview on Mr. Media!

Read or listen to the excellent interview with Lee Salem, president of Universal Press Syndicate, posted February 22 on MrMedia.com.  Salem comments on the syndicate's relationships with several former comic strip creators, including Bill Watterson (Calvin and Hobbes), Gary Larson (The Far Side), and Aaron McGruder (The Boondocks). He also offers personal perspectives on fan-favorite comics like Doonesbury, FoxTrot and For Better or For Worse, and he even throws in some advice for would-be comic strip creators. Salem's views come from a unique vantage point - he's worked behind the scenes and played a large role in developing many of the most significant comic strips of the last 30-plus years. It's great backstage insight for comics aficionados!

Mr. Media

Lio Creator Mark Tatulli Interviewed on "Mr. Media"

He's prank-called the Peanuts gang, enlisted Superman for homework help, shipped a certain Family Circus wanderer to a home for wayward boys, and time-traveled to visit the Yellow Kid. Other than that, he's fairly normal. Unless you consider failed science experiments, out-of-control robots and monstrous reptile pets running around the house out of the ordinary. He also has a tendency to cross paths with aliens, witches and ghosts. Okay, he's a little odd.

Lio has been making huge waves since his debut on GoComics last May, landing in more than 250 newspapers and becoming the surprise hit of 2006. Creator Mark Tatulli recently discussed his quirky new strip in an interview with Bob Adelman of Mr. Media, which you can read or listen to at www.mrmedia.com.

You can check out all of Lio's adventures in the archives at My Comics Page. Your membership gives you unlimited access to the archives of every strip on GoComics (including Calvin and Hobbes, The Boondocks, Foxtrot, Bloom County and more) in addition to customizable daily comics page emails and comics collections.

The Sandbox

It launched exactly two months ago, and already The Sandbox has given many people a new perspective on the troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Sandbox is a military blog, or "milblog," launched by Doonesbury creator Garry Trudeau and hosted by Doonesbury.com. Soldiers both at home and abroad are able to post stories and photos to the Sandbox, and even better, readers are able to respond to each post with their encouragement and support. Some soldiers recount the day's events and express unwavering determination to bring peace to the people of the region; others describe their living conditions and the emotional battles between discouragement and hope, between duty and the desire to come home. It's hard-hitting stuff covering the scale of human emotion, straight from the men and women serving in harm's way. Take a few minutes and check it out.
