Duke 2000 Playing Cards

Doonesbury

Back in 2000, Uncle Duke of Doonesbury made a historic and memorable run at the Oval Office. Alas, Duke's efforts were unsuccessful...but reminders of the Duke 2000 campaign abound. Andertoons has posted images on Flickr of a collection of Duke 2000 playing cards available back in the day exclusively at Starbucks. The face cards feature Doonesbury characters with memorable quotes from Duke's campaign.

Screamland #1, On Sale Now!

Screamland, written by GoComics' own Harold Sipe with art by Hector Casanova, is on sale now! Look for it at your local comic book shop!

Screamland #1

Screamland, from GoComics' Harold Sipe

Wednesday is the biggest day of the week for comic book fans, but March 12th is a bigger Wednesday than most for us here at GoComics.

A lifelong comic book fan, GoComics manager of product development Harold Sipe is the guy who sees to it that hit comic books like Bone, Elephantmen, GODLAND, TMNT and more make it to your mobile phone. Now Harold has taken his love for comics to the next level - he's written an excellent 5-issue comic book series called Screamland, the first issue of which lands in comic shops on March 12th from Image Comics.

The series follows the present-day lives of legendary film stars Frankenstein's Monster, the Mummy, the Werewolf and Dracula, all one-time A-listers who were discarded by Tinseltown with the rise of CG special effects. After decades of clinging to the last threads of their celebrity, the monsters have been offered a film project that may put them back on the Hollywood map.The pitch-perfect art for the series is provided by Kansas City-based artist Hector Casanova (The Lurkers, Midnight Album).

We'll have more info on Screamland in the next few days, leading up to its Wednesday release. In the meantime, check out these links:

  • Newsarama interview with Sipe and Casanova.
  • ComicMonsters.com interview with Sipe.
  • ComicMonsters.com also has this very cool article in which Casanova discusses his mixed media approach to character design on Screamland, with lots of images.

New Comic: Basic Instructions!

Basic Instructions

People like to get advice from someone who knows. That's one of the reasons Scott Meyer created Basic Instructions, the comic strip he calls "Your all-inclusive guide to a life well-lived." Meyer is just the guy to help you out with some of your toughest everyday situations, like when you're forced to listen to someone blather on about their vacation, or when you're trying to pick a new razor, or when you're wondering what small part you can play in the destruction of society.

A veteran stand-up comedian, Meyer draws himself, friends and family members as the regulars in Basic Instructions. This twice-weekly strip has a lot of things going for it, including a clever concept, an experienced comedy writer, and a big endorsement from Dilbert creator Scott Adams. Read it!

New Comic: We The Robots!

We The Robots

What's going on in We The Robots by Chris Harding? A line from Flight of the Conchords might sum it up best:

"Finally, robotic beings rule the world."

When I think of a world ruled by robots I picture the harsh, war-torn landscapes of the Terminator or Matrix movies. Chris Harding's not buying into that. His robots have replaced people in every sense, engaging in mundane workplace conversations, locking themselves in traffic jams and feeling discouraged about life in general, just like the humans used to. But, of course, there's something about a robot that makes depression much funnier.

You'll see new strips approximately three times a week and you'll like them, because Harding is very clever and demonstrates great insight into robo-despair. This is due to the fact that he is a robot himself.*

We The Robots

*Unverified and most likely not true.

New Comic: TOBY, Robot Satan!

TOBY, Robot Satan

Corey Pandolph keeps busy.

He's getting set to launch new Barkeater Lake strips on GoComics once the reruns have finished in early April. He's also continuing his work on The Elderberries, which he took over when creators Joe Troise and the late Phil Frank stepped away from the series in May 2007. He writes regular columns for DrinkAtWork.com, Bollard.com and MAD Magazine.

Apparently starved to find something to fill up all that free time he's been wasting between his day, night and weekend jobs, Pandolph has added one more item to his ongoing to-do list: a new comic strip called TOBY, Robot Satan.

How to describe TOBY? Well, he's an insane robot with delusions of demonic grandeur and aspirations of world domination. After he emerges dramatically from a subway during a thunderstorm, TOBY announces himself as the Prince of Darkness, finds his way to a pub called McGullwack's, and is taken in by Morris Gumboot, the pub's vertically-challenged, middle-aged bartender. Fun like this ensues:

TOBY, Robot Satan

Stuff is in the works...

Yes, it's been a while between posts. But we've been very busy at GoComics.com. Yes, indeed. Very, very busy.

More info to come! Now to get caught up with some posts...

These Pulitzer Prize Winners Have Gone MAD!

MAD's "usual gang of idiots" has assembled a veritable Who's Who of Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonists for an upcoming feature in the world's most notorious cartoon satire magazine. Several of GoComics' own Pulitzer Prize winners - Clay Bennett, Matt Davies, Dick Locher, Jim Morin, Joel Pett and Ben Sargent - have teamed up with cartoonists Steve Breen, Jack Higgins, Mike Peters and Michael Ramirez to provide cartoons for a two-page spread written by veteran MAD writer Jacob Lambert. Each cartoonist provides a single panel in an "expose" that focuses on the Bush administration's environmental policies.

“Why George W. Bush Is In Favor of Global Warning” will run in issue MAD #487, to be released to comic book stores February 13th. The official press release can be found here.

Jeff Danziger on YouTube!

GoComics editorial cartoonist Jeff Danziger has posted a nice little video on YouTube in which he talks about what goes into the creation of a political cartoon, what he gets out of it, and why he thinks cartoonists do what they do. Click the play button on the screenshot below to start the video:

New Editorial Cartoons: Clay Bennett!

The Pulitzer Prize is just one of a host of awards Clay Bennett has won in his editorial cartooning career. Best known for his recently ended tenure as the editorial cartoonist for the Christian Science Monitor, Bennett has an unmistakable drawing style, with clean, simple images whose soft edges belie the cartoonist's sharp wit. His cartoons began running on GoComics on January 16th.

The Argyle Sweater - Coming to a Newspaper Near You!

The Argyle Sweater

Universal Press Syndicate has announced a print syndication deal with GoComics standout The Argyle Sweater. The single panel cartoon will launch in newspapers on April 7th.

The cartoon became an instant hit when it launched on Comics Sherpa in the fall of 2006, growing an even larger following when it made the jump to GoComics just a few months later.

We're thrilled to see Scott Hilburn's work paying off with this print syndication deal, and we're especially proud that the next big thing in your newspaper's comics section started right here. Congratulations, Scott!

New Comic: Rick & Rack!

Rick & Rack

Cartoonist Ethan Long's new weekly comic strip, Rick & Rack, is about a raccoon named Rick and a male deer named Rack. Where does it go from there? Your guess is as good as Ethan's!

"What is this strip about? Well, come to think of it, I really don't know," says Long. "All I know is that I love to draw the characters, put them into different situations and write funny dialogue for them."

So there you have it. If you like talking cartoon animals who say funny things in various settings, then Rick & Rack is the strip for you!

New Comic: It's All About You!

It's All About You

Maturity, humility and selflessness are wonderful things. Unfortunately, they don't really make for great comedy. Self-centeredness? Really funny.

Tony Murphy's new daily comic strip, It's All About You, is all about the self-centered patrons of a local cafe and the barista who serves as their coffee counter therapist.

Pooch Café Creator Inks Movie Deal with Sony!

Pooch Café

Great news to follow-up yesterday's post (and demonstrating why creator blogs are such a good thing). This morning Paul Gilligan announced on his Pooch Café blog that he has reached a movie deal with Sony, producers of the CG films Open Season and Surf's Up, to bring a computer-animated Poncho and the rest of the gang to the big screen!

Fans know Pooch Café is full of material - the Poncho/Chazz/Carmen triangle, Poncho and friends plotting against the neighborhood cats, Poncho's field trips with Fish. And who isn't already dreaming about a "fully-operational" Cat-Catapult in the film's final act?

Keep watching Paul's blog and this one for updates, as the next year or so will see the first stages of development, including story and character designs. Congratulations, Paul!

Luck Runs Out

Lucky Cow

Mark Pett is doing what no health inspector or surgeon general's warning ever could: He's shutting down Lucky Cow.

In case you missed it, Universal Press Syndicate announced last Friday that Lucky Cow, Pett's fast food-themed comic strip, will come to an end on February 2nd. Pett is looking for "more time to pursue other creative opportunities." The final Sunday strip will run on January 27th. Read the official press release here.

Thanks, Mark, for 4+ years of Gary, Clare, Leticia, Elvin, Saturday ads, Kenny the bully (and his mullet), and most especially for one of our favorite comic strip characters of all time, the genius that is Neil.

Pibgorn Sketch Art!

Pibgorn

Pibgorn creator Brooke McEldowney is a fan-pleaser at heart. And he knows Pibgorn fans can't wait for new installments of his thrice-weekly strip. But given his already heavy workload (he's also creator of the daily strip 9 Chickweed Lane), doubling his output on Pibgorn isn't possible. So McEldowney is doing the next best thing.

Starting January 3rd, McEldowney began posting Pibgorn sketch art on the days when new Pibgorn strips don't appear. Fans will now see a new Pibgorn strip on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with each strip followed on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday by its original sketch art. It's a behind-the-scenes look at the making of a strip, three times a week.

A big 'Thank You', Brooke, from Pibgorn fans everywhere!

15th Anniversary of Close to Home!

Close to Home

Happy 15th anniversary to Close to Home, which began this month in 1992. John McPherson's offbeat single-panel cartoon drew comparisons to Gary Larson's The Far Side in its early years; but while Larson's comics more often than not put a humorous spin on nature, McPherson finds the inspiration for his cartoons in everyday life, with normal people finding themselves in slightly (and not-so-slightly) abnormal situations. Close to Home has been a staple on the comics page and a hit in reprints, with cartoons featured in special collections, an extremely successful line of greeting cards, the best-selling Chicken Soup for the Soul series and even underwear.

Congratulations on your much-deserved success, John!

New Comic: Mythtickle!

Mythtickle

Justin Thompson has had several jobs: jousting at the Renaissance Festival, performing stunts in full Batman costume at an amusement park, and employing his physical prowess to portray Robin Hood and King Arthur, among others. So naturally, when he decided his body had taken enough punishment, he transitioned to cartooning, as all men of action eventually do.

Right. It's not the typical resume of a cartoonist, but one look at former ComicsSherpa standout Mythtickle erases all doubt that a former stuntman could produce compelling comics. Thompson's colorful, dynamic strip is a fresh and welcome diversion from the norm, starring, as he puts it, "underused deities, mythical creatures, bees and such." Check out Mythtickle, the newest addition to GoComics.

Doonesbury's Sandbox Celebrates One Year of GWOT-Lit

The Sandbox: Dispatches From Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan

In October 2006, Doonesbury creator Garry Trudeau launched a military blog (or "milblog") that soon became a vast online forum through which hundreds of service members in Afghanistan and Iraq began to share stories with readers here at home.

The Sandbox celebrates its one-year anniversary this month with the release of The Sandbox: Dispatches From Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan (Andrews McMeel Publishing, $16.95). Many of the Sandbox's most eloquent and compelling posts have been compiled to form this brilliant and emotionally charged book. This collection of stories is nonpartisan, devoid of politicking and propaganda, allowing readers a true-to-life glimpse at the effects of war on those deployed as well as those anxiously awaiting their return, with posts from both perspectives.

New Comic: Cul de Sac!

Cul de Sac

"I became a big fan of Richard Thompson when I saw his book, Richard’s Poor Almanac. Thompson has a sharp eye, a fun sense of language and a charmingly odd take on the world. Best of all, his drawings are wonderful—something one doesn’t often see in cartoons anymore. I'm delighted to see Cul de Sac, and I have high hopes that Thompson will bring a much-needed jolt of energy to the daily newspaper. We have a real talent here." - Bill Watterson, creator of Calvin and Hobbes

How many of you out there know that when Bill Watterson says a cartoonist is good, you can probably take it to the bank?

Richard Thompson's Cul de Sac, a strip about the everyday life of a pre-school girl named Alice Otterloop, has developed a very large, very loyal fan following since it first appeared in the Washington Post Magazine nearly three years ago. Now the beloved daily strip makes its home right here at GoComics.

We could go on and on about how great this comic is, but we're not even going to attempt to out-endorse Bill Watterson here. You heard the man. Richard Thompson is really good. Go read Cul de Sac!

New Comic: EEK!

EEK!

Ever wondered about the untapped comedic potential of cadavers, mutants, chainsaws, zombies, cockroaches and vermin? Look no further than the newly launched EEK! by Scott Nickel, a strip that will no doubt boast the ugliest cast in comics.

Talk about prolific. EEK! comes to us hot on the heels of two other recently launched strips produced either in whole or in part by Nickel: His & Hers and Go Team Bob! How he manages to find time for three comic strips and his day job writing for Paws Inc. is open to speculation, but intravenous caffeine, robotic slave labor and/or time travel are probably involved.

Lynn Johnston Interviewed!

For Better or For Worse

As the days wound down to September and the announced transition date for the new, "old/new hybrid" For Better or For Worse approached, fans must have been delighted, or perhaps filled with dread, to realize that Lynn Johnston was quickly running out of time to bring closure to the strip's loose ends. As promised, this week's "flashback" strips saw Michael going through a scrapbook with his daughter, Meredith, and telling her about the earliest days of her grandparents' relationship. But it was all new material, and, come to think of it, Elizabeth and Anthony remain...well, unresolved. So what gives?

Answers can be found within this article, posted today at Editor & Publisher. Simply put, changes in Johnston's personal life have led her to spend more time focusing on the strip, meaning fans will see more new material than originally planned until the strip transitions to its true hybrid form sometime in 2008. While that's great news for FBOFW fans, any joy has to be tempered by the circumstances that led to Johnston's decision. There's also a brief but informative (and candid) interview with Johnston on the Kansas City Star's website today, which you can read, for the time being, by clicking here. In it, Johnston discusses in more detail her plans for life after the strip's transition.

Yahoo Tech News: Comic Books on Mobile Phones

There's an excellent new article about comic books on mobile phones in the Tech section at Yahoo News. New Comic: His & Hers!

His & Hers

Interactions between spouses can be uplifting, aggravating, amusing, frustrating - sometimes all in the same late-night conversation about the contents of the fridge.

Scott Nickel's new comic His & Hers stars Dean and Glori, a couple whose day-to-day lives ring familiar to anyone who's ever been youngish and married, and serve as a glimpse of things to come for those who expect to one day venture into the realm of "matrimonial bliss." Brimming with gender friction and rounded out by a varied cast of well-meaning but often way-out-of-line family and friends, His & Hers offers laughs for everyone.

His & Hers

Retiring? Not me, says FBOFW's Lynn Johnston

For Better or For Worse

In response to rampant speculation about impending retirement, For Better or For Worse creator Lynn Johnston has issued a statement denying the rumors that she has plans to lay down her pens for good in the near future.

"I announced in several interviews earlier this year that I would not be retiring and that For Better or For Worse would continue in a "hybrid" form," said Johnston. "My vision for the hybrid cartoon is to move forward beginning this fall by mixing together new plots with remembrances of the Patterson family's history."

Johnston later added: "I intend to keep the Patterson family around for many years to come."

Out of the Gene Pool becomes Single and Looking

Single and Looking

If you've been frantically searching GoComics.com for Matt Janz's Out of the Gene Pool, don't panic. The strip isn't gone - it just has a new name: Single and Looking. Janz recently decided that the focus of the strip had changed since its inception and a new title would better reflect that change. (Read quotes from Matt Janz here.)

The GoComics archive for Single and Looking will include the last Out of the Gene Pool strips until the new title has been around for 30 days. My Comics Page members will continue to have access to the full archives at MyComicsPage.com.

New Comic: The Boiling Point!

The Boiling Point

Mikhaela B. Reid is on the offensive in her weekly comic strip, The Boiling Point, which made its GoComics debut today. Reid is a wickedly talented and utterly fearless satirist who won't shy away from a fight, regardless of the opponent. It's that willingness to take on all comers that has won her the loyalty of fans and the admiration of peers.

And just in time for her GoComics debut, Reid's first collection of cartoons releases Monday, June 4 on Lulu.com. Attack of the 50-Foot Mikhaela! includes a forward by Ted Rall, who calls Reid "an insurgent cartoonist: smart, irrepressible and unpredictable."

The New Adventures of Queen Victoria

TNAOQV

Let's make something clear right from the start: Pab Sungenis doesn't draw. It's not that he doesn't want to draw, mind you. The problem is, he actually can't do it well. But while an inability to draw would discourage a normal person from trying to make a living as a cartoonist, it didn't faze Pab.

With the help of a few British royals, some clip art, the Virgin Mary, Osama Bin Laden, and the cut and paste feature on his computer, Pab has created the offbeat and amusing The New Adventures of Queen Victoria. The strip debuted in 'undiscovered' territory on Comics Sherpa and is the latest to make its way to the big show on GoComics.

This week Pab introduces the cast for those who aren't familiar with the strip and don't own an encyclopedia. Then it's back to the unusual. Check out the links under the 'About' tab (above today's strip) for all things TNAOQV.
