Hector Cantu Discusses Latinos in WWII

Hector Cantu, co-creator of the Latino-themed syndicated comic strip Baldo, made an appearance on NPR's "Talk of the Nation" on September 24th to talk about the contributions of Latinos in World War II and their omission from Ken Burns' new documentary "The War." Cantu discusses the proactive approach he took by creating "Benny," a new Baldo supporting character whose story is based on true stories of Hispanic World War II veterans. Benny was introduced in the September 17th strip.

Remembering Doug Marlette

You've seen his cartoons, but for those who never had the honor of meeting editorial cartoonist and Kudzu creator Doug Marlette, who was killed in an auto accident last week, here's a nice article on CNN.com in which several friends of the Pulitzer Prize winner reminisce about the personality, ideals and talents that made him such a unique individual. From the article:

"In Marlette's world, victory was measured not by the points you scored but by the points you made; not by banners raised or books published but by the character revealed during the inevitable struggles along the way."

Doug Marlette was a witty, charming and enormously gifted satirist who will be missed by legions of family, friends and fans.

Getting to Know Garry Trudeau

In case you missed it, here is another chance to read the excellent Washington Post Magazine feature from October 2006 on Doonesbury creator Garry Trudeau. The article gives readers a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the groundbreaking B.D. story from last year, in which the longtime character was wounded while serving in Iraq. Great article about a storyline that is obviously close to Trudeau's heart.

New Editorial Page

Having a hard time keeping up with all of the political and social commentary these days?

The editorial cartoon is one of the oldest methods of graphical satire there is. We're happy to report that the craft is well and alive today. Our new "Editor's Pick" editorial page is a one way to get a quick snapshot of current topics and "hot button" issues in the world.

We can't promise that you will agree with every editorial chosen as a "pick" and that's okay. We live in a democratic society and a little free speech/expression is what makes it unique.

The editorial cartoons on the page are selected by our editors and listed by topics. The page updates Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

PSA

This is off-topic, but I need to give a short Public Service Announcement for the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center.

I'm still not sure how she got a hold of it, but my dog ate a package of mouse poison this weekend. I was walking out the back door when I found the shredded package and what was left of the little green pellets by her food bowl.

After making sure that our son hadn't been anywhere near the stuff it was time to take care of the dog. This was Saturday night around 7 p.m., so who do you call? We put a call into the 24-hour animal clinic. (We're still waiting on them to call back.) I jumped online and looked up the poison, but didn't find any information on treatment. My wife called our neighbor and she brought us the Animal Poison Control hot line number.

Long story short, the ASPCA staff was great. They talked me through what to do for the dog (induce vomiting) and follow-on treatment. The dog seems to be in good shape and the doctor from the ASPCA doesn't think she'll have any lasting issues with the poison.

If you have a pet, write down this number, print this page or go check out the ASPCA web site, but make sure you keep this number handy around your house.

ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center - (888) 426-4435

I never thought I'd need it and when I did, I didn't have it.

This also made me realize that we didn't have this type of information around the house for my son.

American Association of Poison Control Centers - (800) 222-1222
If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call 911.
